Overview
Technically skilled and creatively inventive ‘makers’ are an essential part of any production team, sensitive to the stylistic intentions of the designer and director. The training will principally be in theatre, but these skills are widely transferable to different environments, including television, film and major live events.
What the course covers:
- Strong pattern drafting, garment construction and design interpretation skills.
- Graduates work across theatre, film and television after graduation
- Opportunities to work in costume supervision or costume management roles both in-house and Industry Placements
- You will collaborate with the wider creative and production team on realised performances.
- You will work with more sustainable materials and practices to prepare for the evolving creative industries
The programme covers both historical and contemporary costume and accessories but also focuses on the use of more sustainable materials and costume production methods. Throughout, you will be encouraged to explore your own ideas and pathways within the field of costume production.
From the first year of the programme, you will learn how to collaborate with the wider creative team, working closely with designers, performers and the stage management department. There are opportunities to undertake costume supervision and costume management projects both in-house and through professional placement. You will engage practically in considerations of representation, designing for diverse body shapes and types, and developing this inclusive practice to shape and challenge the industries you will work in.
Connections to the costume industry and work experience will enable you to gain an understanding of the broader costume production roles and knowledge to support your chosen career trajectory.

Programme Structure
Courses include:- In year 1 you will learn the foundational skills in costume production from garment construction to supervision for a wide range of media, from theatre to film. You will develop skills in costume production from research techniques to realising finished garments to health and safety guidelines when working with specialist equipment. A core module is the introduction to London as a central resource for theatre and performance industry.
- During their second year, students continue to hone their craft as practitioners and apply this to practical contexts, including for public performances, whilst also developing related research skills and specialist knowledge.
- In their final year, students demonstrate their previous learning through negotiated projects and placement opportunities whilst preparing for professional practice in the industry.
