Overview

The goal of the Physics programme from University of Winnipeg is to formulate theories, or “laws,” which summarize our knowledge of the natural world. We don’t yet know all the basic laws of nature, or how many laws there are.

The famous physicist Richard Feynman said the first principle of science is that the test of all knowledge is experiment and experiment is the sole judge of scientific “truth.” But what is the source of knowledge? Where do the laws that are to be tested come from?

Experiment itself helps to produce these laws in the sense that it gives us hints. We also need imagination to create from these hints the great generalizations: to guess at the wonderful, simple, but very strange patterns beneath them all, and then to experiment to check again whether we have made the right guess. Physics needs people with imagination and a thirst to understand the inner workings of nature.

Do you enjoy physics, but are you worried about what jobs there are for physicists in the real world?

Studying physics, at a basic level, emphasizes problem solving and abstract thinking. As such, this training opens up opportunities in a surprisingly wide variety of areas, including education, finance, and journalism, as well as the more "traditional" areas such as universities and research labs.

These skills, as well as the knowledge gained in studying subjects such as lasers, computer use, image processing and electronics, also make physicists desirable employees in high tech companies.

General requirements

Required High School Course(s): Physics and Math or Chemistry and Math

American High School Curriculum - Complete grade 12 with a minimum high school average of C+ or better on a minimum of 5 academic subjects.

British Patterned Education - General Certificate of Education, with two subjects at Advanced Level and three at Ordinary Level, or three subjects at Advanced Level and one at the Ordinary Level. Secondary School Grade: C (with no mark below a D)

International Baccalaureate – An IB diploma with 3 HL courses and 3 SL courses. For transfer credit or advanced standing, no grade below 4 accepted.

Students will still need to meet the English Language Requirements of the university.
