At this Education program from St. Francis Xavier University (StFX), you’ll learn from professors who are themselves accomplished educators. B.Ed. students get the opportunity to get hands-on experience teaching abroad in their second year. Our students have done their practicum in destinations including Norway, Australia, Kenya, Iceland and Scotland.

Our faculty is dedicated to helping prepare those with a passion for teaching by combining theory and practice to prepare you for the classroom. We make sure you are job-ready by exposing you to a range of electives, from literacy to music to computers, and doing so in a personalized way.

Program at a glance:

The BEd is a two-year program following completion of an undergraduate degree. The program has two streams:

Elementary (primary to grade 6) – Elementary education students must prepare to teach a wide range of subject fields due to the nature of the public elementary schools of Nova Scotia.

Secondary (grades 7 to 12) – Secondary Education teachers are prepared to teach at least two subject fields normally taught in the public secondary schools of Nova Scotia (English, French, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education/Health Education, Gaelic, Spanish, Business, Family Studies, Spanish, Art, Music, Drama).

Specialist programs in Physical Education and French are also available in both streams.

General requirements

Applicants for the two-year BEd program must have completed a first degree in arts, science, human kinetics (formerly physical education), or the equivalent.

Normally, applicants for the BEd program must have a senior-year average of at least 70 as admission is competitive. Consideration is also given to the applicant's performance throughout the entire undergraduate program.

Because of the high number of applicants, students admitted usually have superior academic records. Serious consideration is also given to reports from referees and to work experience related to a career in teaching. Interviews are required.

An overall average of 70% in Grade 12, with no marks below 65% in each of the required subjects.
