Overview
The History of Art (Hons) programme at the Oxford Brookes University emphasise studying works of art first-hand. You will examine works of art on trips to galleries and exhibitions in Oxford and London.
Oxford's famous museums and historic buildings will give you access to world-renowned art. The Ashmolean Museum has a diverse range of art pieces from around the globe. You can also use Oxford's famous Bodleian Library in your final year. This includes the Sackler Library, which has an extensive History of Art collection.
Your time with us will be exciting, stimulating and enriching. You’ll be amongst a close-knit and supportive department. You can expect to be taught by experts in their fields. And, our teaching staff will work with you to help you develop your own interests, specialising in:
- drawing
- painting
- prints
- architecture
- art theory
- sculpture.
Career prospects

- events and projects organisation and management
- teaching and education (in both schools and museums)
- journalism.
You’ll attain an excellent suite of core skills (research, analytical thinking, critical judgment, communication skills) which are regarded as highly desirable by many employers.
In addition, you’ll develop high levels of visual literacy and attentiveness which can fit graduates well for careers in areas like interpretation and advertising.
The Curatorial Practice module provides training in specific skills for those interested in a career in a museum or gallery, whether commercial or publically funded.

- A National Certificate or Diploma at a good standard.
- The International Baccalaureate Diploma (minimum of 24 points) or the European Baccalaureate Diploma (minimum of 60%).
- Five subjects in SCE with two at Higher level or one at Advanced Higher level.
- Three subjects in Scottish Highers or two at Advanced Higher level.
- Any other qualifications considered by the Academic Board to be of equivalent standard.
