Our undergraduate course is aimed at providing you with a stimulating and challenging introduction to design theory and its practical application in relation to performance. Our well established teaching team is made up of highly experienced professionals who will provide you with tuition in a broad range of practical skills including technical drawing, CAD, pattern cutting, costume construction, millinery, tailoring,model making, puppetry construction and manipulation, scenic art and props making.

The programme

Research and reflective practice will form an important part of your work, and throughout the course you will participate in historical and contextual studies, including lectures, seminars, field trips relating to the history of theatre, art, architecture, design and costume and your own practice. The programme is highly flexible, allowing you to concentrate on particular areas of interest through advanced skills classes, conceptual projects and performance-based work in your second and third years.

Programme Structure

  • The training covers a wide range of skills including technical drawing, model making, costume construction, puppetry and prop-making. 
  • Postgraduate designers specialise in either performance (set and costume design), set design, costume design, costume construction, puppetry, lighting design, sound design, or scenic art and construction for stage and screen.

    The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120.

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

General Requirements

  • Applicants will be selected for interview on the basis of the information provided on the UCAS application form.
  • An A-Level or equivalent qualification in art and design is the minimum requirement for entry. Equivalent qualifications include Scottish Highers, BTEC National Diploma/Certificate, WBQ, International Baccalaureate, Advanced GNVQ, AVCE or Advanced Diploma (Level 3), or recognised international qualifications. 
  • We recommend that applicants undertake a general art and design foundation course prior to entry. However, the minimum conditions attached to any offer of a place are based on individual applications and portfolio presentation during interview.
