Description

This Steve Bell Memorial Scholarship for Ethics in News Reporting honors former ABC News Correspondent Steve Bell, teacher, mentor, and advisor to news students for 15 years, and the first Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Chair in Media (1992-97).

In a nearly 40-year career in broadcast journalism, he reported on many of the world’s most important stories, including the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Sen. Robert Kennedy. He was a Vietnam War correspondent and later served as Hong Kong Bureau Chief for ABC. He also was the first news anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America.

Eligibility

  • To recognize students who demonstrate the highest ethics in journalistic conduct illustrated by a commitment to integrity, accuracy, fairness and thoroughness in reporting. Students should demonstrate impartiality yet show compassion in covering issues that affect our nation and world affairs. 
  • To award students who develop thorough content knowledge and who apply themselves not only inside but outside the classroom. Award recipients should produce a significant portfolio while remaining committed to verifying facts, providing a balance of viewpoints and demonstrating respect for sources and individuals impacted by their stories.
  • Full-time undergraduate students majoring in Department of Media/Journalism News with a minimum of 30+ credit hours and a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Selection will be at the discretion of the department chair and scholarship committee.
