Which subjects are drawing the most attention but lack sufficient openings?

We've analysed thousands of Bachelor’s to find out which are in high demand but low supply and outlined a list of the top 10 trending disciplines among students in our Subject Opportunities for 2024 report. Six out of ten are Tech-related, while the rest are LawMedicineBusiness and Engineering related disciplines.

“These programmes are so popular with students that universities have not had enough time to add courses at the same rate that interest in them is growing. Looking at these subjects gives you an idea of the most important emerging (or accelerating) fields”, says Cara Skikne, author of the report, and Senior Editor at Studyportals.

Boost Your Chances of Landing a Spot in Popular Bachelor's Degrees:

    • Start early. Your best shot is having a strong academic record by having good grades, acing relevant subjects and maintaining a high GPA is important. This will make your application stronger, but it is something you work on for years.

    • Focus on relevant experience. Participate in internships, projects, online courses, or volunteering related to your field of interest. Real-world experience makes your application stronger but also helps you have a broad perspective on your chosen discipline.

    • Stand out from the crowd. Build skills or experiences that differentiate you from other students. For example, if you are interested in AI or sustainable energy, focus on a niche within these two disciplines that aligns with current trends or needs and your passions.

    Dealing with Average Grades:

If your grades are average or below average grades, this is clearly not your strong point, but are interested in competitive disciplines, here is some advice on how to strengthen your overall application:

    • Highlight other strengths: Demonstrate your passion, commitment, and potential through extracurricular activities, personal projects, or work experience related to the field.
    • Showcase your soft skills: skills such as teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving can be valuable if you can prove you have them. Many programmes look for well-rounded candidates who can contribute to their field beyond academic achievements.
    • Improve your profile: Work on raising your grades where possible and take additional courses or certifications to show your dedication and improve your knowledge.
    • Apply broadly: Investigate programmes with flexible entry requirements or those in emerging institutions that may offer quality education but with less competition.
    • Personal Statement: Write a personal statement to explain your circumstances and showcase your enthusiasm, resilience, and overcoming challenges.
    • Prepare for entrance exams and Interviews: Some programmes may require specific tests or interviews. Excelling in these can significantly boost your chances of admission.
    • Network: Engage with professionals and academics in your field of interest through conferences, seminars, and online forums. Networking can provide insights, advice, and even recommendations that enhance your application.

    What's Next?

    • Increased Competition: While at this point, competition is generated by lack of programmes, in the future you can expect universities to solve this gap and more students to graduate and enter the job market.

    • More supply and evolving curricula: Universities will likely invest in creating more programmes for these disciplines. These degrees may also evolve to incorporate the latest trends, technologies, and methodologies in these high-demand fields. So, stay updated and adapt.

    • Greater interdisciplinary opportunities: Fields like AI, sustainable energy, and digital technologies are inherently interdisciplinary. Programmes may offer more opportunities to explore these areas across different contexts, preparing students for versatile career paths.
