History
In 1971, the University of Kassel was founded as a comprehensive university during the time of the educational reforms. It provided first and second level degree programmes and had a strong focus on application and practice, characteristics now established throughout Europe.
Education
Few other German universities offer as wide a range in courses of study as Kassel does. From natural sciences and engineering all the way to the arts and humanities– the University of Kassel's unique profile offers numerous fascinating opportunities. Our traditionally strong subjects are the humanities, cultural and social studies as well as teacher education. Student services
The study enquiries ("Information Studium") is the contact point for students and prospective students who have general questions about studying at the University of Kassel. We can provide information on a variety of university-related issues and, if necessary, refer you to more specialised student support services.
Housing services
Cheap accommodation in Kassel is scarce. It can often take weeks to find accommodation, therefore it is advised to start looking as soon as possible.
Library services
Our library system is represented at the six locations of the university. Main location is the campus library on the Dutch Square (HoPla), which also houses the library administration.
Medical services
Citizens of the EU are covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), if they have insurance protection in their country of origin or counrty of current residence. EHIC is sufficient for a study period in Germany. In order to enrol as a student at the University of Kassel it is neccesary to have proof of German health insurance cover.
Campus life
The University of Kassel central campus is located at Holländischer Platz on the edge of downtown Kassel. The former premises of the Henschel Company are home to the Faculties of Human Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Planning, Economics and Management, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The International Studies Centre, the IT Service Centre, and University of Kassel administration are also located here. The library building is the heart of the campus. It provides access to approximately 1.9 million volumes, including 30,000 current periodicals and global electronic media.

The Student Council is a group of students who are committed to the department in their free time. They have the opportunity to participate in various committees and to help shape the university landscape. The self-imposed task of the student council is to constantly improve studying and the atmosphere at the location.
