The origins of the University of Mannheim date back to the Städtische Handelshochschule Mannheim, which was founded in 1907 on the initiative of Mannheim's bourgeoisie.Funded by the Chamber of Commerce, the institution, which functioned as a college for future merchants up to the 1930s, became a center for higher education. In 1967, the Staatliche Wirtschaftshochschule was renamed University of Mannheim.
The University of Mannheim offers first-rate bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. Numerous university rankings confirm the high quality of the programs available, with Business Administration, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, the Romance Languages, History, English and American Studies, German Studies, Informatics, and Business Informatics being ranked in top positions on several occasions.
The university not only offers traditional subjects, it is also known for its interdisciplinary and unique programs such as the bachelor's degree program in Culture and Economy, the integrated LL.B. and state examination program in Law, and the Mannheim Master in Data Science.

The students union is responsible for financial aid, the on-campus canteen and cafeteria, housing in the student's halls of residence, the children's daycare centre, the social- and psychotherapeutic advice centre as well as the administration of the term ticket for public transport.
Through the Studierendenwerk Mannheim you`ll find reasonably priced places to live. Whether you prefer an apartment or a single room in a residence hall, in a traditional working-class neighborhood, or an upscale suburb, there is something for every taste and need. New Mannheimers can enjoy life in a vibrant community, making friends or meeting a future date in the shared kitchen. At the same time you can concentrate on schoolwork in the peace and silence of your own room.
Most rooms are furnished and connected to the university's computer center, which means that internet surfing is free. Heating, hot water and hall cleaning are also included in the price.
The universities in the region each have their own libraries which can be used by international researchers. Some of the research institutes also have special libraries. You will find some of them listed below and their office hours and user regulations on their homepages. Please take note that the hours are different on national holidays than during the semester.

The Institute of Sports doesn’t just organize sports courses; it also runs two gyms and regularly holds events including yoga workshops or sports days.
As a partner of top-class sports, we encourage athletes to participate in university championships or in the World University Games. Top athletes can receive a sports scholarship from the university.
With over 50 student organizations, the University of Mannheim has a lot to offer its students outside of the lecture halls. Getting involved with a student organization is a good opportunity to gain practical experience and meet new people, especially at the start of your studies. The large number of different organizations means that there is something suitable for almost everyone who wants to become actively engaged in voluntary work.

I love studying at the University of Mannheim! I love it's unusual grid system and the city is jam-packed with so many fun things to do. Travelling around the area and beyond is quite easy as Mannheim has excellent tram, bus and train links.
