The University of Oviedo is the only public institution of higher education in the autonomous community of Asturias. It is a university with more than four hundred years of history and a rich historical and cultural heritage. It provides education in all branches of knowledge, both in undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as bilingual teaching and Erasmus Mundus Master’s degrees as a coordinating university. Currently, the university undertakes 80% of the R&D and Innovation activities carried out in Asturias.

More than 400 years have passed since Fernando de Valdés Salas devised the creation of the University of Oviedo in the XVI century. Today, that self-same University is home to numerous disciplines and degrees and a plural community, spread over different campuses and cities. The University was granted its charter on 21 September 1608.


Worthy of note is the participation of nearly 200 companies in the teaching and student placements in academic-career-oriented Master's degree programmes. It coordinates three Erasmus Mundus Master's programmes and offers students bilingual studies, dual degrees with foreign universities, and double degrees via which young people obtain two degrees.

The University of Oviedo has a teaching and research staff (TRS) of more than 2,000 people in 38 departments who come together in research groups to carry out this activity.

The University is home to a group of about 350 young researchers, who join research groups via different calls for grants and programmes to support research training and teaching, at both a post-graduate and post-doctoral level. There are also about 400 people doing research work in the context of research projects and publicly or privately funded contracts.


The University of Oviedo provides supports to its students through a variety of advice and career counselling resources. Available in all its centres, these are aimed at informing students about job prospects related to their courses of studies, a key first step on the road to student placements and employment.

Student services

The Office for International Relations provides the information and support needed to complete all academic paperwork, facilitating the university student's adaptation.

Through the Office for International Relations, they will get all the information and support they need to complete the legal and academic paperwork and to carry out all essential paperwork, such as opening a bank account or to study the different accommodation options. Future University of Oviedo students can plan their trip in advance and have all the information they need prior to arrival in Asturias.

The University of Oviedo has seven campuses located in the central area of Asturias, in the cities of Oviedo, Gijón and Mieres. Although dispersed, the campus model is structured around teaching and research specialization, sustainability and creating social spaces that enable university coexistence.

Sports facilities

The Sports Service is the body in charge of the promotion, organization and development of sports in the University of Oviedo.

Its aim is to popularize the different aspects of physical education and sports by offering the university community a wide range of different sports activities: hygienic, agonistic, expressive, creative, etc.

Its job is geared towards improving the health, quality of life and hollistic education of the members of the university community, and promoting the study of everything that is related to physical education and sports.

I think the study program has a very high level. A lot of studying has to be done, but as years go by your realize this is what will differentiate your from colleagues from other universities. Also the hospital where you do your internships is brand new, which allows you to already interact with the latest technology. The only thing I would want my university to improve...

University of Oviedo is the only university of my region, Asturias. Most of the degrees are taught in this university. It is pretty difficult to enter in some of them , as the marks needed are quite high, so some people from Asturias go eventually to some university nearby. But generally speaking, I think University of Oviedo is ok in the teaching level. However, the...

The university of Oviedo offers a different programme that you can't find in some universities, at least in Spain, with sequential subjects with a duration of two years (120 ECTS) full-stack, including both back and front-end contents
