On 19 September 1899 the Austrian Emperor and Hungarian King Franz Joseph I signed a decree bringing into existence a Czech technical university in Brno. This was the first Czech higher education institution in Moravia.

With its 20 thousand students and 8 faculties, is the nation's largest technical university. Focusing on science and research, the university now has five of its own research centres and being engaged in two centres of excellence. In recent years, has been among the world's best universities according to international rankings QS World University Ranking and THE World University Ranking.
In the following chapters you can find information on programmes and courses taught in English. BUT offers both short-term and long-term studies at all three levels - Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral.
Research and development activities at BUT centres around non-specified research receiving funding from the state budget. Attention is also given to research projects that are clearly defined and supported by contracting authorities such as the Czech Science Foundation, grant agencies of the Czech government ministries, international grant agencies, and scientific and research programmes.
The South Moravian Innovation Centre (JIC) supports innovation businesses and commercial applications of research and development. It also serves as a go-between for research departments at universities and commercial companies maximising the research and development potential at regional and national levels.
BUT has been cooperating with the leading international companies such as Škoda Auto, Siemens, FEI, Honeywell, Bosch and IBM on a long-term basis. BUT links these companies with students who have the opportunity to pursue an internship related to their field of study or even to be supervised by industry experts while working on their theses. Job offers are shared with both students and graduates.

International Relations Department in cooperation with International Students Club BUT organize Welcome Week for all international students coming to study at BUT.
The Welcome Week provides you with the information you will need to make your stay and study as an international student at Brno University of Technology as easy and enjoyable as possible.
International Students Club will provide you help and advice concerning everyday matters and problems you may deal with before, during and after your arrival. Also during the whole semester ISC will organize trips, excursions and free time activities of all kinds.
If you enjoy busy student life and want to have school, refectories and sports ground at hand... choose dormitories Pod Palackého vrchem. They are part of university campus and can provide accommodation for ∼2 500 students – in rooms with 1/2/3 beds with own bathroom, toilet and kitchenette.
The Central Library has existed since 1899 when a library was established at the Czech Technical University in Brno (a predecessor of Brno University of Technology). Until 1911, it was situated in Jaselská Street, then moving to Veveří 95 (today's campus of BUT Faculty of Civil Engineering). At that time, its collections included 12,373 volumes
PharmaciesMost of the medicines available elsewhere can be obtained here, though not necessarily in every pharmacy. In case of need of some kind of medicine in the evening, at night or over the weekend, when shops are normally closed, there is a non-stop pharmacy located conveniently in the centre of the city, Koliště 47.
The main center of students life: no one calls it other than „Palačák“. Here you can find four faculties, refectories, cafes, students club, sports grounds... and also the largest dormitories. So put your slippers on and hurry to the lecture.
All students of BUT can sign in to two sports lessons per week for free. And there is plenty to choose from: athletic stadium with olympic parameters, modern gyms, tennis courts, climbing wall, fitness – and even our own shipyard at the Svratka river.
The Student Chamber represents students of all BUT faculties being part of the BUT Academic Senate, which is the supreme academic representative body according to the University Act.
Local branches of international organizations:
Brno University of Technology received, as one of the first in the Czech Republic, the ECTS and DS Label certificates. Both certificates are proof that BUT meets the criteria of the EU in the area of higher education and in addition, they make a major contribution towards broadening mobility and increasing the internationalization of the university.
