King Faisal University was founded in 1975 (1395H) in the City of Hofuf, Al-Ahsa. At the beginning KFU comprised four colleges, namely the Colleges of Agricultural and Food Sciences; the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Resources in Hofuf; the Colleges of Medicine; Architecture in Dammam City.
The KFU colleges offer undergraduate and graduate programs in natural science, health science, agricultural science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. KFU aims at acting as a development engine and a major knowledge partner in supporting vital sectors; locally and regionally, by providing futuristic education, research driven by change and development, community engagement for mutual enrichment, and sustainable business development.
Scientific research is a pillar of KFU mission. KFU provides multiple funding channels to its researchers and has numerous research centers for high-relevance fields to local and national priorities. Research productivity of KFU, both in terms of publications and citations, has grown considerably in the past few years and is expected to grow further as the university continues its emphasis and research support.

Founded in 1975, the (≈ 4,000,000 m²) KFU’s campus is large(≈ 4,000,000 m²), with several thousand students from high school to graduate level and more than 2,144 academic staff, according to the university’s own figures. Men and women are taught separately, as is custom in Saudi Arabia, where females and males have an equal chance in all 15 university colleges, including education, science, arts and healthcare. Al-Hofuf itself is a relatively large city with 600,000 residents and a wider suburban area of more than 1,000,000 people. The region has a hot, desert climate with temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees celsius in summer, but is moderate throughout the rest of the year.
On-site facilities at King Faisal University include sports pitches, including a full-sized football stadium, and indoor gym equipment. The university’s sports department organises a number of competitions, clubs and activities such as football, basketball and swimming.
