We began in 1978 as the Northland Community College with a staff of 10 tutors and have now grown to become Te Tai Tokerau’s largest provider of tertiary and vocational education. In 1987 Northland Community College changed its name to Northland Polytechnic [Tai Tokerau Wānanga] and to NorthTec [Tai Tokerau Wānanga] in June 2006.
We have been delivering education for the people of Te Tai Tokerau for over 40 years and remain as committed to serving our communities today as we did then.
NorthTec | Te Pūkenga undertakes research to inform the teaching on the applied degrees that we offer. Applied research is often delivered in partnership with business organisations and involves the practical application of science, knowledge, and technology for specific client-driven purposes.
The provision of business and industry-focused research and consultancy by staff is important to NorthTec. We invite expressions of interest from businesses wishing to link to staff expertise in professional and applied research.

The term ‘flatting’ is used to describe sharing a rental property with other people. Whether you are living with others or looking for a place to live by yourself, rentals provide the biggest range of options.
The cost varies depending on your desired standard of housing, location and the number of students living together. Usually a refundable bond also needs to be paid, and you are responsible for keeping the property reasonably clean and tidy and paying all of your living expenses including electricity, water, internet and food.

Te Whare Pukapuka, the NorthTec Library, is located at the heart of the Raumanga campus. If you live outside of the Whangarei District, the library can send books, DVDs etc., to your home address with a Freepost bag for returns.

Navigators (Ākonga/Learner Champion Advisors) are available to help from pre-enrolment through to completion of your studies at NorthTec. Navigators deliver a tikanga-based model, applying knowledge and understanding of Reo Māori & Māori tikanga in day-to-day practice. Navigators can liaise between ākonga and their tutors, services and systems. Navigators are also familiar with the concerns and complaints process, how to access hardship and government agencies.
