History
The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) started in 1961 as a College of the University of London. In 1963 it became a Constituent College of the University of East Africa. It was formerly established in August 1970, as a National University, through the University of Dar es Salaam Act number 12 of 1970.
Education
The University of Dar es salaam (UDSM) offers various academic programmes leading to the award of certificates, diplomas, and degrees. A total of 88 Undergraduate Degree Programmes are offered at various academic units of the University. The postgraduate programmes increased from 48 to over 150.
Research
The DRP is responsible for fostering attractive environment for research activities at UDSM. The Directorate of Research and Publication is accountable for overall coordination and monitoring of the quality and perfomance of research endevours at the University.

Student services
The Department of Student Administration, headed by the Dean of Students, deals primarily with the personal and social welfare aspects of the student’s life. The following facilities are provided by the office of Dean of Students: residence, games and sport, worship, student counseling in various problems and career guidance. The Dean of Students also assists the Deputy Vice Chancelor Administration in student disciplinary matters.
Housing services
A limited number of rooms in the halls of residence are available on application before the beginning of the academic year. Accommodation in the Halls is therefore not guaranteed for every student. Students are urged to find their own accommodation outside the Halls. Presently,t there are six Halls of Residence on the main campus. There are also residential places for students at Ubungo and Mabibo Hostels.
Library services
The Library provides both print and electronic information services to its users. The services provided include: Lending Services, Document Delivery, E-mail and Internet, Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI), Current Awareness Services and photocopying services.
Medical services
The University of Dar es Salaam Health Centre (UHC) provides health services to students, staff members, staff families and the general public. The Centre is located within the Mwl. Julius K. Nyerere Mlimani Campus. The Centre also runs dispensaries located at Mabibo students’ Hostels and IMS (Zanzibar) as well as a dispensing room at SJMC (Kijitonyama).
Sports facilities
The University main campus has some of the best sporting facilities in the country including an international size track field, a swimming pool, tennis courts, soccer pitches, netball and basketball courts, hockey and cricket fields. However, most of these facilities require intensive rehabilitation. A gymnasium where badminton, squash and weight lifting can be held is in place. Students can therefore participate in athletics, swimming, lawn tennis, table tennis, football, basketball, netball, hockey, badminton, cricket, handball and boxing.

MY EXPERIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM
The University has good facilities that help in building research experience and practical experience for students pursuing engineering related subjects.
