UG was originally founded in 1974 in Rasht, as the Graduate School of Business. It became the 17th university in Iran after it obtained approval from the Higher Education Council in 1976. Through a collaborative agreement between Iran and Germany, UG began its academic activities by accepting 400 students in 9 fields of study.
Today, with 10 faculties and 4 research institutes, University of Guilan is the largest university in northern Iran. Over 17000 students are currently enrolled at UG, 40 per cent of whom are graduate students. UG offers more than 110 B.A./B.Sc. programs, 160 M.A./M.Sc. programs, and 140 PhD programs.
With 4 research centers and over 70 laboratories (with the anthropology lab being the latest one to become fully active), University of Guilan puts research above all else, to ensure a better future for us and for the future generations.

University of Guilan's Central Library has one of the greatest archives among state universities in Northern Iran, with over 170000 books (in Persian, English, Russian, French and Germen). There is also a database with numerous domestic or foreign electronic books and articles.

I enjoyed the environment, my professors, and my studies, I think the extra-religious courses that we must take each term are not necessary and make the education last longer, and the GPA unrealistic. To summarize, I’d say it was a great experience and I enjoyed the physics and everything about that.
