History
Muroran Institute of Technology was established in1897 as the Department of Civil Engineering at Sapporo Agricultural College. In 1949 it was established as the Muroran Institute of Technology, comprising four departments.
Education
Muroran Institute of Technology provides students with the opportunity to receive a comprehensive science and engineering education concentrating on natural science and scientific education through its programs.
In addition, promotes a system in which students in all departments can acquire expertise on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and receive information-related education, thereby pushing forward educational reform aimed at creating a fusion of science, informatics and engineering.

The Career Support Center provides a variety of support to help students achieve their desired career paths. In addition to lectures to support students’ career formation, the Center hosts a number of events such as job search guidance, job fairs and public servants briefing sessions and gives individual job consultation to students.

Housing services
- The Meitoku Dormitory for male students has a capacity of 363 people and consists of buildings A and B and an administration building, each of which is four stories of reinforced concrete. All three and were completely renovated in 2010.
- Each room is a triple room about 15 tatami mats (approx. 27 m2) in size and is divided into 3 units. Privacy is ensured in each unit, which looks like a private room and is equipped with a desk, chair, loft bed and bookshelf.
Library services
The university library maintains and provides books, journals, electronic journals, databases and other resources for study, research and learning. It is widely open to the local community.
ICT services
With abundant books and a study space, the library provides a comfortable learning place for students. PCs can also be used to make a report, do design work, and search on the Internet. Students can also watch DVDs in the audiovisual space.
Medical services
The Health Administration Center was established in 1960 as a facility to promote health, to prevent and early detect diseases and to provide first-aid treatment for students and faculty of the University. Medical staffs, including a physician, a psychiatrist, a school nurse, and a counselor, and administrative staff work here.
Campus life
With beautiful scenery and delicious food, Muroran, a manufacturing town in Hokkaido, has many attractions not found in other cities.
Student clubs
- Muroran IT has a wide range of athletic and cultural clubs and groups.
- There are also groups engaged in activities unique to Muroran IT, such as the Eco-Run Project, in which students make fuel-efficient cars by themselves.
- If you belong to a club, you can have various experiences that you can only have in college. You can also meet like-minded people.
