History
The institutional roots of TU Wien, which was founded in 1815 as the Imperial & Royal Polytechnic Institute of Vienna, lie in the military and technical-commercial colleges which began to spring up in Austria, as they did all over Europe, at the start of the 18th century.
Education
The range of courses offered by TU Wien is designed to meet two objectives. The first of these concerns specialist knowledge and technical skills. Since this specialist knowledge must increasingly be made effective within complex social processes, then as a second objective, communicational and social skills must also be promoted.
Research
Research at TU Wien is focused on five key areas. These five pillars represent strengths and skills of TU Wien going back many years, and they strengthen its profile in international competition. Within these key areas, work is carried out on an inter-disciplinary basis and the research spectrum is being constantly developed. The ‘additional fields’ provide further, equally important areas for research. All research activities are organised into the research matrix.
Career
Your academic career at TU Wien can begin as early as during your studies (e.g. as a tutor or a student employee). Upon completion of a master’s degree or diploma, graduates aspiring towards a doctorate can apply for a position as a pre-doctoral fellow. In this role, you will have the opportunity to expand on your technical and academic education and take the first step towards your career as an academic at TU Wien by writing your own thesis.
