History
The history of Shantou University Medical College dates back to 1924. In that year our direct predecessor, the Chaozhou Obstetrics Training School, was founded. In 1959, the Chaozhou Obstetrics Training School obtained approval from the Chinese State Council to expand into a generic medical college offering 3-year training programs in clinical medicine.
Education
Providing medical education is our primary responsibility. We are committed to offering comprehensive medical programs of the highest quality to our students.Several of our programs are listed as key national or key provincial disciplines, and each year our College is granted major educational awards and prizes. Our programs are consistently among the first choices for top students in Guangdong and many other provinces in China.
Research
SUMC is a major medical research base in southern China with several important research centers, research units and key laboratories. With state-of-the-art facilities and equipment at our disposal, our international teams of first-rate scientists have been able to make significant scientific contributions and breakthroughs.
The past few years have shown a dramatic growth in our research activity at SUMC, both in terms of range of research areas, quality of work and outcome. Shantou University Medical College currently has two campuses: the original medical campus in the historic center of Shantou city, and another modern campus shared with the main campus of Shantou University in the northeastern suburbs. The majority of our students spend their first few years at the main university campus, and carry on their specialized training and research activities using the extensive facilities at our original medical campus site in the heart of the city. There are regular, free shuttle buses running between the two campuses.
