History
Chinese maritime education originated at Shanghai and grew out of the Shipping Section of Shanghai Industrial College founded in 1909 (towards the end of the Qing Dynasty). SMU was established by the Ministry of Communications in 1959.
Education
At present the university runs 3 post-doctoral research stations, 17 doctoral programs63 master’s degree programs, 49 bachelor’s degree programs, and 13 associate degree programs. SMU boasts 16 provincial and ministerial key research institutes and laboratories, 1 state-level key discipline, 5 state-level specialties with special features, 9 ministerial or municipal key disciplines, and 17 Shanghai municipal “educational heights”.

University Ranking
Housing services
- The International Students Dormitory is exclusively for international students at Shanghai Maritime University. Each room is equipped with a bathroom, an air-conditioner, Internet access, a refrigerator and a closet. If you need a room in an international student dormitory, you should reserve it when applying for your study program. If you are a degree program student, you should save your accommodation fee on your bank card at the start of each semester, and the school will make a one-time deduction on a designated date.
Medical services
SMU will offer insurance for international degree students who do not have international insurance from their home country. In case of unexpected illness, those students should call the number on the insurance card and the staff of the insurance company will guide medical treatments and insurance claims.
Campus life
. According to the university layout adjustment in Shanghai, and for better service of construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center, Lingang new campus inaugurated in 2008. On October 20 2019, SMU had celebrated its 110th anniversary.
Sports facilities
- The university gymnasium comprises three areas, in the north, south and west sides.
