In 1754 the Empress Maria Theresa founded the Oriental Academy to train young men for the diplomatic service of the Habsburg monarchy. Out of the Oriental Academy evolved first the Consular Academy and in 1964 the Diplomatic Academy. In 1996 the Diplomatische Akademie Wien - Vienna School of International Studies was granted the status of an independent public training institution.
The Diplomatische Akademie Wien - Vienna School of International Studies is the oldest professional school in the world, dedicated to preparing talented university and college graduates for international careers and positions of leadership in international organisations, the EU, in public service and in international business. The main training areas encompass international relations, political science, international and EU law, economics, history and languages.
The Vienna School of International Studies boasts an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research landscape spanning its five departments: International Relations, International and EU Law, International Economics, History and Cultural Studies.
Current research projects cover a variety of themes, ranging from historical narratives to normative orders of the world community, from populism to economic diplomacy and infrastructure finance, from climate risk to the impact of monetary policy on financial markets and societies, from militarisation and nuclear threats to UN peacekeeping, and from EU foreign policies to the politics of culture in the context of the mediatisation and globalisation of communication.

Students of the Vienna School of International Studies may live directly on campus and also enjoy their meals there. There are 40 single rooms with showers available for students. Lunch can also be booked. Students can use the common rooms with satellite TV, a bar, sports facilities and the reading room. Our campus is surounded by a lovely garden, just being literally one step away from the next underground station in the heart of Vienna.
The student library is a treasure trove of over 5,000 copies of books.Our collection covers a broad range of academic disciplines at the DA in six key areas: Economics, International Relations, Law, History, Environment and Miscellaneous.From the latest course fundamental readings to law encyclopedias, the library provides access to both classic references and cutting-edge resources.

Students of the DA have the opportunity to engage in a number of sports activities. In order to balance the high intellectual challanges posed in class (“mens sana in corpore sano”), students may use a swimming pool, a fitness room, a gym and a running track. The sports facilities are located in the adjacent Theresianum building. Furthermore, students can strengthen their team spirit in competitive skiing, basketball, volleyball, tennis and swimming tournaments.
20+ student societies active in various areas (from culinary society to society of international security) as part of the DA Student Initiative. We are very proud of our international and very active student body.
