The Global Campus of Human Rights is an inter-disciplinary centre of excellence supported by the EU, aiming at pursuing the continued promotion of human rights and democratisation through education, specialised training, and research cooperation worldwide through a network of regional partners.

History

The Global Campus of Human Rights, born as European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) in 2002, was created as a non-profit association for the main purpose of organising the European Master’s in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA). Similar Master programmes have been developed in other regions. In 2019, EIUC changed its name to Global Campus of Human Rights.

Education

Each one of the eight Regional Networks of the Global Campus represents a Master's Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation. The Programmes cover a wide range of core disciplines connected with law and social sciences. While sharing a number of common features, each one of them offers unique regional insights, nuanced perspectives and rich professional experiences.

The Global Campus continues to develop educational activities and trainings which belong to a common programme of joint activities, including the Global Classroom, the Nelson Mandela World Moot Court Competition, as well as exchanges of professors, researchers and students from the Regional Programmes, and workshops of integrated teaching.

Research

In addition to comprehensive research conducted by scholars affiliated with its roughly 100 participating universities, the Global Campus carries out targeted joint research projects related to current developments and challenges in the field of human rights and democracy.

These projects include both EU-funded collaborative studies, such as FRAME and ACTIONES, and research initiated by the Global Campus itself, as the Global Campus Human Rights Journal. Other projects, as the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty, take advantage of the rich and diverse perspectives of the universities participating in the Global Campus.

Career

Global Campus graduates hold the positions of Attorney-General, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Vice-Minister of Justice for Indigenous Peoples, High Court Judges, Chief Justice, high ranking diplomats, members of national human rights institutions, University Dean, Vice-Rector, Chairperson of the UN Committee of the Rights of the Child, Judge at the European Court of Human Rights, Deputy Secretary to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, high ranking officials in regional organisations, officials in UN agencies, legal advisors for national and international institutions, leadership positions in civil society organisations and education institutions, and senior journalists.
