1868 - Founding of the "School of Mechanical Engineering" at the Royal School of Construction in Stuttgart. The School of Construction was originally located in part of the former royal stables, whence the name "Stall" (stable) for part of the University today.

Pro: - Especially the fundamentals (first 2 semesters) are teached well by very good professors (in my experience) - Regardless which topic/issue a student has, there is somebody to talk to and get help / advice - Hochschule Esslingen has a good reputation as well as many connections to the local industry (focus on automotive) - Some very experienced professors who have spend many years in the industry - Lots of interesting (leading) companies around, which do research and often offer vacancies for working students, thesis and internships Cons: - As the focus is more on Maths, Electrical Engineering and Signal Processing, actual Programming is neglected and this will be noticeable in later courses. Some of them are being taught together with students from Software Engineering and therefore the requirements are inappropriate for students from Computer Engineering as they have not the same basis in Web/Database programming - There will always be at least one incompetent professors who is a master on his area but totally unable to teach the theory to the students as he/she is missing the ability to create motivation / excitement in the students; otherwise he / she may just be not really able to explain things properly to the students - The campus Flandernstraße is outside the city (center) and therefore nothing is really close and therefore you will be reliant on eating in the local cantine which I rate 5/10. BUT there is a new campus being built very close to a busier part of the nice city and as I heard all IT students will move there approx. at 2025.
I love the city of Esslingen, and the dormitories for Hochschule Esslingen are located in some great spots in the city. The courses are fairly well put together, some more than others. However, the technical support of the school is atrocious. I have never had more difficultly getting connected at any other school in my life. Even in the student dorm that I am staying at, I need to connect to the university Wifi, and it is incredibly unreliable, so I have struggled with online classes and scheduled online meetings with peers. Not to mention - as an international student - calling home is difficult because my connection is constantly disrupted. Outside of that and the bureaucracy that comes along with being an international student in Germany, I really love it here and do not at all regret my decision to study here. I totally recommend this place to other students - just be aware of the frustrations you will be getting yourself into.
One of the biggest problems is the lack of empathy from the Professors. The go-to answer from them is typically; you can keep trying. That's well and good, if you have unlimited time, and you understand everything the first time around. But if you fall behind even a bit it suddenly becomes a non-stop race to try and catch back up to keep going. Many of the online services offered by the professors are also very lacking considering this is an IT School. Documents to the class will sometimes only be made available the day of the lecture, so you cannot prepare yourself for the day, and the speed at which they go through the lecture means you either listen, or attempt to take notes and listen. Some documents will also have mistakes and even if mentioned on the Forums or per Email will not be updated, and even if they do get updated will most likely be forgotten and the previous wrong version used again for the future; this has happend multiple times within my own experience in Math classes and Tutorials. Most of the time you're given just theory in class and told Look it up online to learn the practical examples, heavily meaning that most of the coding you will learn you are expected to learn yourself, which seems entirely opposite the reason why someone goes to school to learn coding. Being told learn it yourself from a college seems entirely counter intuitive and wrong, in my own opinion. Not only that, but many times the professors will forget to upload something, and once you email them about it might upload it at their own leisure; so if anything is missing on a Friday, unless the professors check their emails over the weekend, it might be left until Monday, if even then. The largest problem, as I said, is a lack of empathy from the professors. I understand not giving free handouts, but causing work to be failed over small contrive things without any discussion seems entirely wrong and a lack of professional etiquette, especially when the professors they themselves make mistakes, and will even get annoyed at students because we just know it all , then refusing to acknowledge their mistake and admit that the student was correct.
