History

Since 1451 the College of Arts has been at the forefront of delivering world-leading teaching, learning and research in the arts and humanities. Over the last five centuries  we have worked to push the boundaries of what’s possible. We’ve fostered the talents of seven Nobel laureates, two Prime Ministers and Scotland’s inaugural First Minister.

Education

The College of Arts is one of four inter-disciplinary colleges which make up the University of Glasgow.  We are home the Arts and Humanities subject areas such as: Art History; Music; Literature; Translation; Archaeology and Information Studies. Whether you want to expand your knowledge, develop employment skills or explore your own creative practice, we have the right programme for you.  

Research

The College is home to excellent research in a number of areas. In 2017 we were awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education, the highest accolade for any higher education institution, for our work on the Historical Thesaurus of English.

Student services

We offer a wide range of support services to our students. You can find a full list on our webpages. 

It is worth pulling out a few which might be of interest. 

The International Student Support team are on hand to help with your arrival, visa and guidance on living in the UK. 

The Careers service is here to support you in your employment. This could be through our internship programme, the network (putting current students in touch with successful alumni) or helping you with your C.V and interview preparation. 

The Graduate School supports all graduate students in the College, managing and facilitating a range of services and resources to ensure a productive and interdisciplinary collegiate environment

Housing services

  • We offer a number of self-catering residences which are within a walkable distance to campus. 
  • We offer 39 or 52 week contracts and we don’t mix Undergraduates and Postgraduates in the same block.  
  • By choosing University of Glasgow accommodation, you have access to one of the UKs finest University Sports facilities included in your accommodation fees.
  • You get 24/7 access to dedicated University support. 
  • We have a variety of flat and room types at varying costs are available for you to select from.

Library services

The University Library, is one of the largest libraries in Europe. Situated over 12 floors, it holds more than 2.5 million books and journals, as well as providing access to an extensive range of electronic resources including over 30,000 electronic journals. Our Special Collections is one of the foremost resources in Scotland for academic research and teaching with collections spanning 2000 year of human existence. 

ICT services

  • There are study spaces for more than 2,500 students, with over 800 computers, and wi-fi access is available throughout the building.
  • We also offer IT training and support.

  • Our course are also supported by an online learning environment called moodle

Medical services

  • We have an on-campus doctor’s surgery and pharmacy.  
  • We also offer a counselling and psychological service to all students.  This includes counselling, self-help resources and peer support.  

Campus life

The College of Arts is based at the Gilmore Hill campus.  Glasgow is regularly listed as one of the most beautiful campuses in the UK.  We are a based in Glasgow’s fashionable and exciting West end, about 1.5 miles from the city center. With a wealth of cultural attractions, and a year-round programme of world-class events, it is easy to understand why Glasgow is firmly established as one of Europe’s most exciting destinations

Student clubs

As a student at the University of Glasgow, you are automatically a member of its Students’ Representative Council (SRC).  The activity of the SRC is organised around three main areas: Representation & Support; Participation, and Services

The SRC is home to four award winning student media group:
  • The Glasgow Guardian Newspaper
  • Glasgow University Student Television 
  • Glasgow University Magazine
  • SubCity Radio
There are over 150 clubs and societies at Glasgow and most of them enjoy affiliation and support from the SRC.
