History

The Institute was founded in 1955 as the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies by Gaspard Weiss, in collaboration with his wife, Louise Weiss, and cofounders Frank Elton and Sybil Fearnley. Weiss and his foreign language colleagues envisioned a graduate school that would promote international understanding through the study of language and culture.

Student services

The Office of Student Services strives to create a positive student-centered environment, dedicated to providing the Institute students with the necessary resources, advising and caring support to enhance their student life experience. Fostering a multicultural environment conducive to meeting the needs of the MIIS community.

Housing services

Monterey is a wonderful place to live and study. Once you have settled into your new home, we encourage you to experience all the area has to offer. The Institute does not offer housing, but we have housing information and resources that can assist you in the process of securing housing. Planning ahead will help!

There are lots of interesting things to do in Monterey and in the surrounding communities—from great restaurants to local attractions to outdoor fun. From transportation to banking to places of worship, these local resources can help make your transition to Monterey easier.

Located at the center of campus, the William Tell Coleman Library serves current students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

  • Information Technology Services (ITS) provides support to the entire Middlebury Institute community.
  • You can find us on the third floor of Casa Fuente, Room 320. Take the stairwell to the right of Human Resources. We're at the corner of the hallway.
  • The ITS Help Desk is the first point of contact for reporting all technology issues.

Your health and well-being are essential to your success as part of this community. Though we don’t have an on-campus health center or fitness facility, we can help you find the health-related resources you need to maintain a balanced lifestyle.
