The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids in Dresden, Germany performs world-leading fundamental research in the fields of condensed matter physics and solid-state physics. The International Max Planck Research School for Chemistry and Physics of Quantum Materials is a joint PhD program in collaboration with Technische Universität Dresden and the University of St Andrews, Scotland.

History

The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (MPI-CPfS) in Dresden, Germany performs world-leading fundamental research at the boundaries of solid-state chemistry and condensed-matter physics.

Our International Max Planck Research School for Chemistry and Physics of Quantum Materials (IMPRS-CPQM) started in January 2016 and is currently funded for an initial six years.

Education

At IMPRS-CPQM, we offer a variety of doctoral research projects which cover the entire scope of research performed at MPI-CPfS. Every PhD project will have at least one supervisor based at MPI-CPfS and one at one of our partner universities, Technische Universität Dresden and the University of St Andrews, Scotland. For all projects, we envision an active involvement of both supervisors in the actual research and students may spend time at either institution to work on their project.

Research work will be combined with graduate courses and general skills training. Students can benefit from courses and other training opportunities offered at all three institutions.

Research

At the core of IMPRS-CPQM is the research that we carry out, to which our PhD students make a major contribution. Thanks to the scale of our facilities, we cover a broad range topics in modern physics and chemistry research into quantum materials. All participating research institutions have a long history of excellent research in the relevant fields.

As it befits an interdisciplinary IMPRS like ours, we do not only cross boundaries between physics and chemistry in a large number of research topics, but rather choose a dedicated collaborative approach between research groups from different disciplines.
