Semmelweis University’s history started 250 years ago in 1769, when Queen Maria Theresa added a medical faculty to the University of Nagyszombat (now Trnava, Slovakia). Not long after, the university moved first to Buda then to Pest (now Budapest) and, once the university settled in its permanent location, a period of great development commenced.
With its six faculties and a Doctoral School, the University covers all aspects of medical and health sciences education.
The university runs programs in 3 languages: in addition to Hungarian, students have been able to pursue their studies in German since 1983 and in English since 1989.
Today, students from around the globe come to Semmelweis University to acquire hands-on, competitive knowledge from distinguished professors on graduate and postgraduate levels an environment equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
Semmelweis University boasts a truly international community, students come from 110 different countries.
Research, development and innovation are fundamental and integral parts of the University’s activities responding to the world’s greatest challenges in the field of medicine.
Traditional areas of research such as cardiology, oncology, neurosciences molecular and translational medicine along with pharmaceutical research are supported and complemented by innovative disciplines like artificial intelligence, translational biotechnology, big data and regenerative medicine using and cutting-edge technology.
Our programs meet international standards and the educational requirements of the Hungarian Accreditation Committee (MAB). Each year, over 1,500 students earn their diplomas from one of the Semmelweis University’s six faculties, and typically find their first jobs within three months of graduation.

Semmelweis University in Budapest is a diverse school of many nationalities. We are fully aware of the fact that arriving in a foreign country and getting used to a new environment can be very challenging. Student offices assist students in managing their academic and financial administration as well as finding what is useful for them among university services.
Semmelweis University currently has five dormitories and two professional dormitories that provides accommodation for more than 900 students in their halls of residence.
"Semmelweis Housing" offers counseling to Semmelweis University students only. The exclusive real estate agency helps students moving to Budapest and to find ideal home for the time of their university studies.
Semmelweis University’s Central Library - together with its library units - constitutes one of the largest and most modern medical special collections in Hungary. The library is currently available in two locations: the Basic Medical Science Centre Branch and the Central Branch located at Mikszáth Kálmán tér 5.
Semmelweis University has a large number of buildings, which are used for teaching, research, and patient care. A special feature of these buildings is that they bear stylistic features from many different historical periods. They are the scenes of your university life, the places of friendships, romance, and shared studies. Most of the buildings are scattered throughout the centre of Budapest. You can quickly get anywhere in the city by public transportation.
The University has nearly 40 departments distributed among the 4 main clinical centres.
Semmelweis University offers a wide range of sporting opportunities for students. Physical education classes are compulsory at most faculties during the first four semesters. The various training sessions (water polo, volleyball, basketball, handball) and optional sports activities (judo, aerobics, yoga, tennis, frisbee, zumba) further add to the variety of options.

My experience at the university has been highly rewarding. The professors are incredibly supportive, and the campus environment is very welcoming. I truly enjoyed the practical approach to learning, which helped me develop real-world skills. While the administrative processes could be a bit faster sometimes, the overall academic quality, facilities, and student life completely make up for it. I highly recommend it to future students.
My study experience at Semmelweis’s has really been very good. Starting with the nice and helpful Teachers that have been working hand to hand with the students. Also the whole university environment is really calm , safe and beautiful that makes it easy for students to enjoy and study well.
For me, this university is a disappointment on one level. Compared to its reputation, the bursary system is underdeveloped and the quality of education is divided. Although it may seem like the right choice from a professional point of view, I would not necessarily start my studies here again.
