Università Iuav di Venezia was established in 1926 as one of the first Architecture Schools in Italy. To this day, it still maintains its status of uniqueness. It is a design themed university focusing on the teaching, research and practice in the design of living spaces and environments and in the design of everyday use objects, of fashion and graphics.
Syllabuses, courses and learning and workshop activities are organised in 4 undergraduate degree programmes and 6 graduate degree programmes covering the fields of architecture, design, fashion, visual arts, urban and regional planning and theatre. In addition, Iuav offers advanced specialisation courses and 8 PhDs. A learning technique unique to Iuav is the workshop, which is meant to offer learning opportunities and work experience under the direct supervision of high-profile professionals and teachers.
Iuav has established agreements with important Italian and foreign cultural institutions, museums and universities such as La Biennale di Venezia, Teatro La Fenice, Palazzo Grassi, Musei Civici Veneziani, Triennale di Milano, Parsons School of Design, MIT, IIT, CCA, Tongji University. Iuav students are involved with all of these institutions on a regular basis. Iuav is a nationally accredited public university. The English-taught MA provides education and training for internationally oriented architects, in accordance with the Directive of the European Parliament 2005/36/CE. MA is a prerequisite to take the Italian State Exam to qualify as licensed architects. Overall it is good because it gives enough space to the students to discuss the concept and logic behind a new design. On the other hand the university needs a more technical approach in the theoretical subject and also in the practical one, so that the students once in the field can apply the design skills learned in the real world.
My University offers a great education on contemporary art and culture, training students with excellent critical skills. Practice and theory are mixed, trying to give both the right attention.
It was good but could have been better, academic staff sometime was not really energized to do activities, we did not always interact with them, it was more like once on 2 weeks, something like that. the was no proper campus but more like a big building. the administrative staff was terrible, never helpful, always slow. No sport facilities in there, the space in Venice is small so it's not totally their fault.
