History

For the past 40 years the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) has been at the forefront of the environmental movement, pioneering low-carbon living and renewable technology. At the Graduate School of the Environment (GSE), students benefit from our extensive practical and academic knowledge, graduating with the skills needed to become leading players in the sustainability sector.

Education

CAT's Graduate School of the Environment (GSE) offers a range of inspirational post-graduate programmes. Courses are directed by a unique combination of leading professionals, academics and authors. They are based in CAT’s stunning new eco-educational facility, the Wales Institute for Sustainable Education. With flexible learning programmes to suit all needs, and teaching that places sustainability at its core – CAT offers an unparalleled academic and practical learning experience.

Research

The Centre for Alternative Technology provides an ideal venue and inspiration for research in the field of sustainable architecture and renewable energy, with over 40 years' practical experience and many working examples of building methods and renewable technologies on site. This provides a unique environment for study, with access to leading experts in their fields.

Career

To date over 1,800 people have completed postgraduate awards at CAT. Students have gone on to make a real difference through a wide variety of careers and experiences, from architecture and energy management to environmental policy and land management. Current CAT students and graduates also work across government, industry, charities and academia, with many running their own businesses or setting them up after they graduate. Housing services

Durng residential study weeks at CAT (typically five days for MSc modules and six days for MArch modules) accommodation is available for students on-site.

With two accommodation options to choose from, either in the award winning WISE building or in our bunkhouse style eco-cabins staying on-site during the residential weeks enhance the immersive experience of studying at CAT.

The vegetarian CAT café and O’Donelly’s bar also offers social space for students to meet and use outside of studying and to also continue with discussions long after lectures finish.

Library services

Other resources available online to all students include recordings of lectures, online discussions, and access to online journals via Athens or Science Direct and to online books via the awarding university library.

ICT services

Free WIFI across most of the site allows students to use a variety of open spaces to study outside of their accommodation durign the module weeks. Access tot he Virtual LEarnign Environment is provided after enrollment along side the studetns CAT email and ID.

Campus life

CAT’s award winning WISE Building is a shining example of a modern sustainable facility. The Sheppard Theatre and other teaching spaces within the WISE building are sued during the module weeks on-site for teaching activities.
