Xamk is an innovative higher education institution driven by the idea of unlimited lifelong learning and study that focuses on wellbeing, technology and creative industries. Xamk is the 5th largest university of applied sciences in Finland. It provides education in eight fields of study, participate in research and development and provide services to the businesses and residents of the area. There are campuses in four towns: Kotka, Kouvola, Mikkeli and Savonlinna.

About

History

The new South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences – Xamk – started on 1 January 2017 when Kymenlaakso and Mikkeli Universities of Applied Sciences merged.

Education

Xamk provides a broad range of education services.

  • bachelor’s and master’s programmes
  • open UAS studies and study paths
  • multidisciplinary continuing education
  • specialisation education
  • apprenticeship training in higher education

Full-time studies leading to a bachelor-level degree last 3.5-4 years (210-240 ECTS).

You can apply to study for a master’s degree if you have a degree from a university of applied sciences or another higher education degree plus at least three years of work experience in the relevant field of study. Studies in a master-level degree programme take 2.5 years (90 ECTS).

Research

Research, development and innovation activities (RDI) are one of the mandated tasks of universities of applied sciences. Universities of applied sciences produce research data and new methods as well as products and services according to regional needs. In addition, RDI activities serve studies at the universities of applied sciences and their development. RDI activities are guided by e.g. EU and regional strategies.

Student services

Xamk provides companies, individual people and organisations with a wide range of expert, meeting and restaurant services as well as continuing education services. In addition, the range of services includes the high-quality facilities and devices of Xamk’s laboratories.

Companies can also benefit from the skills of the university of applied sciences students by hiring a trainee or a student who can do their thesis on a topic relevant to the company.

Library services

The Library services of South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences provides library services to the students and staff of Xamk in Kotka, Kouvola, Mikkeli, and Savonlinna.

The library staff gives assistance and guidance in using the library and information resources. Some services are also available electronically via Kaakkuri-Finna.

Student Life

Campus life

Xamk has four modern campuses located in Kymenlaakso end Southern Savonia regions. Campuses are  conveniently located in the town centre or nearby.

The range of services on campus is wide: restaurants, cafés, libraries, indoor and outdoor sport and leisure facilities, as well as services to promote studying and student well-being.

The learning environments – classrooms, auditoriums, laboratories, workshops, etc. – are modern and comfortable. In addition to providing education, all campuses engage in a diverse range of research and development activities and provide services.

Being an Applied Sciences University, my study mostly consist of self-learning and self-improving with the teachers guideline. Located in an rural part of the country, the life here are slow and peaceful.
