English and Art History (Hons) University of Sussex

Overview

In English, you’ll:

• examine literature from across periods, genres and cultures

• question norms and address global challenges such as climate change, AI and social inequality

• develop your own critical and creative voice while honing practical skills for communicating with diverse audiences, supported by opportunities for placements, cultural partnerships and study abroad.

In Art History, you’ll:

• explore art in its broadest sense, from ancient mosaics to global environmental art, and from Pre-Raphaelite jewellery to music videos

• gain the tools to analyse images and objects critically, and develop visual literacy and cultural awareness in an age of image saturation

• engage with themes such as materiality, decolonisation, feminist and queer art histories, and institutional critique

• get hands-on experience through exhibition curation, live briefs with cultural partners and a study trip to Rome.

Careers

English is multidisciplinary and flexible. Art History is a practical humanities subject. Studying them together gives you transferable skills in critical analysis, research, communication, independent thinking and problem-solving. You’ll also understand how visual culture works – an essential skill in an image-saturated society.You can use your English and Art History degree to go on to postgraduate study, or for careers in fields such as:
