About

This course combines in-depth subject specialism in computer science with interdisciplinary breadth, creative teamwork and entrepreneurial skills. You will gain a solid grounding in computer science while applying your subject knowledge to innovate and translate your ideas into plans for digital and creative enterprises, both social and commercial.

The course will equip you to use the critical, theoretical and practical skills central to computer science, allowing you to develop knowledge and skills across a range of areas as you proceed through the course, from programming and algorithms to robotics, machine learning, cryptography, bioinformatics and animation.

You will come together with students from other innovation disciplines such as history and geography to learn and apply design and systems thinking to digital and creative ideas and put this into practice working in transdisciplinary teams, ultimately creating new ventures together.

In the innovation courses, you will find out how to work with others who will bring their own specialisms, backgrounds and ways of thinking alongside yours. You will learn how to set about designing products and services, and you will work with external clients on projects they value. You will learn how to develop your own ideas, how to evaluate innovative solutions, how to put together the plans to pursue them and how to present them to others and gain support.

By the time you graduate, you will have been involved in planning a venture. You will have learnt how to evaluate the potential of the venture and how to finance it. You will be supported in this by groups in the University and external partners who are at the forefront of innovation in areas including digital media, environment, sustainability, healthcare and education. All the way through your course you will be able to draw on a network of advisors who are involved in starting up or investing in new ventures. And if you are ready to start your own venture by the time you graduate, they will be ready to support you.

Audience

We are looking for bright, creative people from a wide range of backgrounds. We will provide an innovative curriculum and an environment that values rigour, creativity, risk-taking, communications and teamwork.

You will have a serious interest in your chosen specialism and want to pursue it to a high level. You will also need to understand it well enough to explain it to people with different specialisms and you will want to use it to apply it to real challenges and opportunities.

You will be motivated by your potential to create and to innovate. You may already have done things that demonstrate this; you may only just be realising that this is what you want to do.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

  • Minimum required score:

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • A-levels (including international A-levels): A*AA including A* in Mathematics; or AAA including Mathematics and Further Mathematics
  • A-levels (including international A-levels): AAA including Mathematics; or AAB including A in Mathematics and Further Mathematics
  • IB Diploma: 38 overall to include 18 points at Higher Level with 6 in Higher Level Mathematics
  • IB Diploma: 36 overall to include 18 points at Higher Level with 6 in Higher Level Mathematics
  • Cambridge Pre-U: Requirements are as for A-levels, where Grade A* is D2, A is D3, B is M2, and C is M3
  • Access: Pass Access to HE Diploma (Science or Science and Engineering) with 30 credits at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit. 15 credits at Merit. 15 credits at Level 3 mathematics are required with 12 of these at Distinction. Where possible we recommend taking as many Level 3 mathematics credits as possible. Recommended mathematics units include calculus, algebra and trigonometry.
  • BTEC: D*DD in IT Practitioners or Engineering plus grade A in A-level Mathematics.
  • SQA: SH: AAAAA and AH: AA including Mathematics
  • Welsh Bacc: Requirements are as for A-levels where the lowest grade required in a non-subject-specified A-level can be replaced by the same grade in the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Level Core
  • EB: 88% overall with 9.0 in Mathematics
  • International qualifications: Qualifications, scholarships and local information sources for your country
  • Subjects required at GCSE or equivalent: Grade C in Mathematics and English Language.
