Studying Geography at University of Zurich teaches students to understand fundamental concepts and current developments in the subject. The program provides students with a broad and foundational education and offers them the possibility to specialize in their last year.

Geography studies the processes that alter and shape the world we live in.

Geographers aim to understand reciprocal influences and dependencies in their field, they document change, formulate scenarios and develop sustainable plans of action for the future.

This includes examining both physical processes and the interplay between humans and the environment.

Physical geography explores morphological processes on the earth’s surface, investigates the properties of water, snow and ice in the hydrological cycle, and studies soil and vegetation in climate change.

Human geography and economic geography analyze how human beings, groups and institutions shape their habitats and how they act within them.

A distinctive characteristic of the institute is the strong emphasis on modeling and quantitative methods.

Advanced geographic information systems and remote sensing technologies are instrumental in modeling the processes being investigated as well as in illustrating and understanding spatial phenomena.

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Geography is a general geoscientific degree providing knowledge of all sub-areas of geography. It does not qualify students for careers in geography.

Career options

The Geography BSc serves as a basis for a Master's degree at the University of Zurich (UZH) or another university.

It is possible to enroll in a Master’s degree program in another subject after earning a Bachelor's degree in geography; however, this may be subject to fulfilling further conditions.

The Bachelor degree does not form the basis to go on to the study program for Teaching Diploma for Secondary Education and is not a qualification for positions or careers in geography.
