Overview
You will also study crime scene investigation, materials chemistry and instrumental analysis and techniques, as well as advanced topics in forensic chemistry which will include relevant case study material.
You will also benefit from learning in a research-active environment: academic staff in the division have collaborated with Greater Manchester Police on a number of forensic projects. You will gain practical skills in newly refurbished, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and a dedicated forensics apartment suite.
This degree is professionally accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Programme Structure
Year 1 aims to provide a firm grounding in the most important principles of chemistry including general and materials chemistry, reactions and mechanisms, laboratory techniques, skills development and forensic chemistry. Study options include biological and medicinal chemistry and a foreign language.
In Year 2 you will focus on forensic chemistry. Units include: forensic investigation: scene to court, inorganic and organic synthesis, physical and inorganic chemistry, analytical techniques and chemical and physical analysis for forensic science
If you opt for the four year sandwich route your third year will be spent on placement.
In your final year units include: advanced chemistry concepts, forensic case handling and advances in forensic chemical analysis .
