Overview
Our Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies course at UCL addresses architectural space from an interdisciplinary perspective and explores alternative approaches to design, research and creative practice. Unlike a conventional degree in architecture where students generally follow the same curriculum, this degree will allow students to customise their own course through a wide choice of optional modules taken in other disciplines at UCL. In addition to modules at The Bartlett, you may select from topics in other departments including anthropology, archaeology, art history, economics, planning, education, geography, management, and politics.
Highlights
The flexible nature of the degree enables students to tailor a course of study suited to their interests both within and outside the built environment, opening out to a wide range of exciting careers and further study options at some of the most prestigious design and research institutions in the world. This includes in landscape architecture, set design, urban planning, video games, artistic research, professional architecture, local government, real estate, architectural history, curating, urban regeneration, community engagement, sustainability, property development, public administration, and filmmaking. Careers also extend beyond the built environment and develop from a student’s module choices while on AIS, for example in human rights and public health. This course also offers dedicated modules in architectural research, design and creative practice, and sustainable city infrastructures taught by renowned interdisciplinary designers, filmmakers, urban researchers, artists, and green planning and policy makers. All modules emphasise project and activity-based learning, material and conceptual rigour and experimentation, and learning through group work, study visits or field trips that connect theory to real-world experiences. The emphasis in this course is on the constant production of small assignments for seminars/tutorials, which will build up to a larger portfolio. There is also an emphasis on group and peer reviews where you will learn to explain your work, listen to feedback and critically evaluate it.AIS is the only undergraduate course at The Bartlett School of Architecture to offer a whole year immersed in another university (the equivalent of your third year) with global destinations that include Montreal, Melbourne, Tokyo, Umea, Hong Kong and Vienna.Programme Structure
