Dietitians have advanced knowledge in the science of nutrition and are able to use this knowledge to advise on appropriate diet, food preparation and menu planning to treat nutrition-related disease. Accredited practising dietitians often work alongside health professionals in hospitals and community settings delivering individual dietary counselling, medical nutrition therapy and group dietary therapy. Their work contributes to the promotion of health, the prevention and treatment of disease such as diabetes and cancer, and optimal health maintenance.
During this course, you will have opportunities to complete placements in a variety of settings, working with clients from many cultural and social backgrounds. At QUT Health Clinics you will provide, under the supervision of practising dietitians, specialised advice to clients based on their individual dietary needs. You will also complete professional placements in a range of settings that may include community health centres, hospitals, correctional facilities and catering institutions. This holistic experience will prepare you for a number of professional roles.
Your theory-based studies will include foundation units in chemistry, anatomy, food science and the principles of food and nutrition. You will then advance to study in biochemistry, physiology and nutrition science. You will have the opportunity to research and critically analyse the future areas of dietetic practice such as medical nutrition therapy, food service management and community nutrition.
At the end of the second year of study in this course you will have the option to apply for the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours).
