About

The Law and French programme at Trinity College Dublin is a four-year, full-time degree. This public study course combines a rigorous legal education with advanced linguistic and cultural training. Students develop fluency in French while mastering Irish law, preparing for diverse international professional opportunities.

Overview

The Law and French programme at Trinity College Dublin offers students a comprehensive education that bridges the gap between common law and civil law systems. This interdisciplinary degree ensures that participants gain a deep understanding of the Irish legal framework while achieving high-level proficiency in the French language and culture. By integrating these two fields, the university prepares graduates to navigate the complexities of a globalised legal landscape and the specific requirements of European institutions.

Why Law and French at Trinity College Dublin?

Choosing this programme means joining a prestigious institution where small class sizes foster a close-knit and supportive learning environment. A defining feature of the course is the mandatory Erasmus year spent at a partner university in France, which provides invaluable first-hand experience of a civil law jurisdiction. Students benefit from the expertise of both the School of Law and the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies, ensuring a balanced and high-quality academic experience.

Syllabus

The curriculum is designed to provide a solid foundation in legal principles alongside linguistic mastery. In the initial years, students focus on core legal subjects and French language skills. As the programme progresses, students can choose specific pathways, such as the professional legal route or a focus on French studies. Modules may include:

  • Contract Law
  • Criminal Law
  • Constitutional Law
  • Torts
  • Equity
  • Land Law
  • French Language
  • Foundations of Law

Careers with Law and French

Graduates are well-equipped for a variety of high-level careers both within Ireland and across Europe. The combination of legal expertise and linguistic fluency is highly valued in sectors such as foreign affairs, the public sector, and international business. Many alumni pursue roles in media, finance, journalism, or within European Union organisations. Additionally, the programme provides the necessary academic foundation for those seeking to qualify as solicitors or barristers, provided they select the required professional modules during their studies.

Programme Structure

Courses include:

  • In the first and second years, you will study a variety of legal modules, taken alongside students reading for our other undergraduate law programmes. You will also further develop your language skills through studying a variety of modules on French language, politics and cultural studies. New entrants are not expected to be fluent; rather they will develop their language skills through the degree.
  • The third year is a compulsory year spent studying legal and language-related modules in one of France's top-ranking universities. This year abroad is designed to enable the student to enhance their knowledge of French law whilst perfecting their fluency in the foreign language. At the end of the first year of your programme, you can choose to major in law (we refer to this as the ‘professional pathway’ – leading to the degree of LL.B. (Ling. Franc) or you can major in French (resulting in a B.A. degree).
