Overview
Mathematics
Most of the Mathematics study-units in the first two years of the degree are compulsory. In the third year, students are asked to choose a stream from four available options.
The four options from the Computing Science and Mathematics (Hons) course offered by University of Malta are Graph Theory and Combinatorics, Functional Analysis and Topology, Applied Mathematics, and Biomathematics.
Computing Science
The programme focuses on giving sound scientific and practical skills for constructing and analysing complex software systems.
The focus is moving from developing applications for a single powerful machine to new environments ranging from (i) ones in which developers harness the computational power of multiple computers in order to leverage the cost of expensive calculations and guarantee acceptable levels of service, to (ii) the other extreme of developing systems which run on mobile devices with limited computational, memory and power resources.
Careers
As a mathematician, you may work in the public sector, such as in the Central Bank of Malta, Ministry for Finance, Economic Policy Department, National Statistics Office, Malta Financial Services Authority; and in the private sector such as in insurance companies, banks, financial institutions, gaming companies, and consultancy firms.
You may also find employment in the academic, manufacturing, logistics or IT sectors.
The Department of Mathematics also offers postgraduate degrees, both at masters and doctoral levels (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) in Mathematics.
Based on world-wide recognition of University of Malta degrees, the graduates and postgraduates have been accepted to continue their studies in a wide range of overseas institutions in Europe, the United States and elsewhere.
