Overview
Linguistics
During the Linguistics and Spanish and Latin American Studies course offered by University of Malta they will provide you with knowledge on the multifaceted qualities of linguistics, ranging from sociolonguistics, psycholinguistics and Maltese sign language, to applied linguistics, Python programming, Stylistics and the tripartite influence of discourse, ideology and power.
They also encourage you to participate in the Erasmus+ mobility programme, as they believe that a multicultural and diversified international experience will deliver a more holistic and beneficial academic journey.
Spanish and Latin American StudiesThe undergraduate course in Spanish and Latin American Studies, they will provide you with an academic lens of the history, literature and development of the respective languages and countries.
By learning about the culture, key figures and historical periods and progress as recalled through their literature, you will acquire an intricate and deeper understanding and appreciation of the language, its people and the country's current stance and contribution in a national and international manner.
They will also refine your linguistic abilities and thus become more proficient in the language use. They will also encourage you to participate in the Erasmus+ mobility programme for a multicultural and diverse academic journey.
Applicants wishing to join the part-time mode must submit their application as full-time, and then include a note in the comments box of the application form, denoting their preference to be considered for the part-time option. Such requests will be considered by the Board of the Faculty.
Careers
As a graduate of this course you will be employable, both locally and foreign, as a linguist, lexicographer, technical writer, forensic linguist, accent coach, translator, copywriter, interpreter, editor, language therapist and as a computational linguist.
If you are interested in furthering your studies, or are considering an academic profession, then they encourage you to pursue on of the postgraduate local programmes.

General requirements
- The General Entry Requirements are the Matriculation Certificate and a pass at grade 5 or better or at SEC Level 3 in the Secondary Education Certificate examinations in English Language, Maltese and Mathematics.
- The Matriculation Certificate comprises six subjects and is awarded if students obtain a certain number of points including passes in a language, a science subject and a humanistic subject as well as a pass in a subject entitled ‘Systems of Knowledge’. Two of the six subjects must be at Advanced Level, three others at Intermediate Level and Systems of Knowledge.
- If you pursued your secondary education outside Malta, the University would accept comparable qualifications, provided that the required mix of subjects and levels would is comparable to the Matriculation Certificate.
- An Advanced Level pass at Grade C or better in Spanish.
