Overview
Robotics has evolved into a distinct engineering discipline, moving beyond fragmented efforts across separate fields to require highly integrated expertise for developing intelligent systems that can meet future challenges.
This interdisciplinary programme jointly offered by the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Data and Systems Engineering, and Civil Engineering, designed to nurture robotics engineers with holistic, systems-level thinking and strong cross-disciplinary capability.
It is underpinned by a distinctive Hong Kong–Shanghai two-city study roadmap with a dedicated HKD 50,000 studentship for Shanghai study, an experiential learning pedagogy, and tailored dual postgraduate support for academically outstanding students, including a research matching scheme and an HKD 100,000 entrance scholarship for taught postgraduate studies, thereby creating a comprehensive and forward-looking education model that nurtures a new generation of innovative robotics engineers.
Programme Features
Interdisciplinary Robotics Training- This interdisciplinary programme consolidates the expertise and learning resources of four departments into a coherent curriculum. The curriculum delivers systematic training that integrates robotic mechanism design, sensing and perception, motion control, embedded systems, and artificial intelligence, equipping students with solid engineering foundations and cross-disciplinary technical competencies to develop intelligent autonomous systems.
- The programme adopts a project-based and experiential learning pedagogy, reinforcing theoretical knowledge through hands-on laboratories, multidisciplinary design projects, engineering training, and industrial practice.
- A studentship of HKD 50,000, covering round-trip airfare, nearby accommodation and a living allowance, supports students’ Year 3 study in Shanghai, integrating world-class academic teaching with first-hand industrial exposure to the innovation ecosystem of the Greater Bay Area and the advanced manufacturing hub of the Yangtze River Delta.
Dual Postgraduate Support
ROBO Undergraduate Research Matching Scheme
The scheme provides early, matched research opportunities with professors in relevant robotics engineering areas for academically strong and passionate students in Year 2 or above.
Seats are limited and will be subject to further screening and assessment.
HKD 100,000 Robotics Master Degree Programme Entrance Scholarship
Eligibility: Students with a cumulative GPA (CGPA) of 3.0 or higher in their undergraduate studies are eligible to apply for the scholarship, subject to admission to either the Master of Science in Engineering in Robotics and Intelligent Systems or the Master of Science in Engineering in Low Altitude Technology at HKU Engineering.
Career Prospects
Graduates are prepared for diverse career paths in robotics and autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, technological innovation and research and development. They may engage in the development and application of intelligent robots, autonomous vehicles, drones, AI-enabled systems and smart manufacturing technologies. Graduates are also well positioned to pursue postgraduate studies at master’s or doctoral level in robotics engineering, artificial intelligence, intelligent systems and related disciplines.
Programme Structure
- The programme adopts a progressive curriculum structure. The first two years focus on core engineering fundamentals including engineering mathematics, mechanics, electrical circuits, programming, and artificial intelligence literacy.
- Advanced studies in later years cover robotic modelling, sensing and perception, control systems, embedded computing, and AI-enabled autonomous systems. Learning is reinforced through laboratories, design projects, industrial internships, and an integrated capstone project, enabling students to apply theory to real-world engineering challenges.
