Overview

The African Studies students at University of Lisbon are expected to acquire tools to face the challenges posed by the labor market in many fields: as advisors of private and public companies; in governmental and international cooperation agencies; in non-governmental organizations for development, cooperation and social solidarity; in institutions related to diplomacy and international relations; in economic, social, cultural and pedagogical activities. The Study Program further contributes to knowledge construction in its different disciplinary domains in order to ensure its continuity at postgraduate level.

Career prospects

Graduates develop activities in state and international cooperation bodies, in non-governmental development organizations (NGDOs), cooperation and social solidarity; in institutions linked to diplomacy and international relations; in the media; as advisors to private and public companies with interests in Africa, in public and private bodies in the field of culture, and as researchers.Many African Studies graduates continue to study. The course gives access to 2nd and 3rd cycle courses, especially in the areas of African History, Portuguese-Speaking African Literature and Contact Linguistics, among other areas of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

General requirements

Hold a secondary school diploma (or equivalent) that qualifies you for admission to higher education in the country where it was awarded.
Demonstrate academic preparation in the subject areas required for the degree you are applying for.
Demonstrate Portuguese language proficiency at B1 level (CEFR), or commit to taking a Portuguese language course or language assessment if you do not yet meet the requirement.
Meet the minimum application grade of 100/200, with selection based on:
50% secondary school average
50% results from the required entrance examinations or equivalent qualifications accepted by FLUL (e.g. ENEM, Gaokao).
Submit the required application documents, including your passport, secondary school diploma, academic transcripts, and a declaration confirming your international student status.
