Overview
Physics from Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) analyzes the interaction and transformation of substances based on experimental observation, and studies the basic motion laws of substances on different scales from basic particles to cosmic celestial bodies.
Key facts
The development of physics can be divided into two stages: classical physics and modern physics. From the establishment of Newtonian mechanical system in the 17th century to the end of the 19th century, physics experienced the development stage of classical physics, forming a grand and rigorous basic theoretical system including force, heat, electricity, light and other sub-disciplines. In the 20th century, relativity and quantum mechanics were born one after another, marking that physics has entered the modern physical stage. Modern physics has made great breakthroughs in exploring the formation and evolution of elementary particles, greatly liberating the productive forces and expanding the new frontiers of human cognition. Today, with the progress of experimental technology and detection methods, new physical phenomena continue to emerge, there are a series of basic physical problems to be urgently solved, including the law of celestial motion, the basic structure of microscopic matter at a deep level, and the physical properties of many macroscopic complex related systems.
Physics is closely related to other science and engineering majors and has promoted the development of many disciplines including mathematics, chemistry, biology, materials science, information science and so on. Modern physics principle combined with human production and life, has given rise to include atomic energy, semiconductor and superconductor, laser, aviation and aerospace, a series of new technology subject, triggered a human in the field of information, materials, energy science and new technology revolution, become the main driver of modern human society progress. Physics has penetrated into all aspects of national economy, military and national defense and daily life, and has greatly changed people's way of life and cognition of nature. In the foreseeable future, physics will likely make breakthroughs in quantum information and quantum computing, high temperature superconducting materials, fusion energy, nanomaterials and other fields, driving new developments in related science and technology.
