Overview

Throughout the Earth Sciences degree from University of Auckland you’ll be taught by knowledgeable scientists, many of whom are major contributors in their field.

You can choose from a wide range of subject areas, and you'll also include a capstone course at Stage 3. The capstone course is student-led. It's your opportunity to integrate and apply your learning to a real-world problem in your chosen subject area.

Earth Sciences seek to understand how geology and surface processes interact to create the complexity of the Earth system. A holistic understanding of Earth systems allows us to learn from the past, comprehend present-day processes, and engender a sustainable future and a circular economy.

Earth Science graduates are in demand globally. There are many exciting opportunities. For instance, you might help to meet challenges associated with sustaining energy supplies and new infrastructure development, contribute to low-carbon economic development, and mitigate climate change.

Earth Science graduates have a unique breadth of understanding across both geology and physical geography. Therefore they're suited to broad range of careers. They work as scientists in environmental management; land development; engineering geological ground investigations; natural hazard monitoring, management and mitigation; as well as in sustainable mineral exploration and extraction, and groundwater management.

Earth Science graduates can build successful career pathways. For example, many become Chartered Geologists (CGeol) or Chartered Members of Engineering New Zealand (CMEngNZ) and work as Professional Engineering Geologists.
