Overview

Studies in the Jazz specialisation centre around improvisational music.

With a focus on improvisational methods through memory, transcription and analysis, you'll advance your instrumental proficiency. You'll also deepen your knowledge of jazz history and theory while gaining well-rounded expertise in the genre.

You'll benefit from opportunities to perform in recitals and concerts. Not only are these excellent assessment tools; but they'll also act as preparatory gigs for you as you develop the skills required to perform as both a band member and leader. Collaborations are a major focus for the jazz community, and these are actively fostered within Jazz programme of The University of Auckland. If you're a student in the Jazz, Performance, or Songcraft and Production specialisations, you'll enjoy opportunities to work with others and learn from their practice.

Career

As a graduate you’ll have the skills and expertise to pursue a wide range of career opportunities in New Zealand and overseas. Building a career on stage is a frequent goal, but the music industry runs on more than performers and composers. There is a collection of people who keep the industry moving, such as writers, managers, producers and teachers.
