Biomedical Science (Including Foundation Year) from the University of Essex gives you key knowledge and modern strategies to diagnose and treat the human immune system, pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria, haematology and blood transfusion, cell pathology and mechanisms or neurological diseases.

Key facts

You'll spend Year Zero on our Life Sciences Pathway, gaining an introduction to biology, chemistry for biology, and mathematics and statistics for life sciences. You’ll then choose whether to progress to the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science, BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences or BSc (Hons) Marine Biology.

In Year One, you’ll participate in Science Week at Public Health England (PHE) in Colindale. In Year Two, you can visit hospitals in the Eastern Region and beyond. In your Final Year, you’ll attend our Biomedical Employability Day and have the chance to contribute to the IBMS Congress.

You’ll graduate on the path to a career as a biomedical scientist or medical researcher.

All applications for degree courses with a foundation year will be considered individually, whether you

think you might not have the grades to enter the first year of a degree course;
have non-traditional qualifications or experience (e.g. you haven’t studied A-levels or a BTEC);
are returning to university after some time away from education; or
are looking for more support during the transition into university study.

Our standard offer is 72 UCAS tariff points from at least two full A-levels, or equivalent, to include a science subject.Examples of the above tariff may include:

A-levels: DDD (including a science subject)
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: MMP (in a science subject)
T-levels: Pass with E in core, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided.
