Overview
Applied Mathematics is the key to the solution of a wide variety of real-world problems, ranging from engineering to business and economics, by combining in-depth analytical thinking, mathematical modelling skills and high-level programming abilities.
As a university of applied sciences, THWS - Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt emphasizes practical experience in its study programmes. Besides choosing between two possible fields of specialization (business or engineering), the degree programme includes an internship at a company during the sixth semester which is frequently followed by an in-house bachelor’s thesis.
Contents of the Programme
The Applied Mathematics program is based on a core mathematics curriculum supplemented by computer science courses and application-specific electives.
- Mathematics: Following the foundations in calculus and linear algebra, the curriculum includes the core areas of applied mathematics like numerical mathematics, optimization, differential equations, probability theory and statistics.
- Computer Science: The computer science focus is placed on hands-on programming skills in several programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Python), knowledge of database systems and implementation of algorithms in mathematical software like Matlab and R.
- As fields of specialization you can choose between
- Business: Contains economic sciences, accounting, international trade law, business processes, process and quality assurance, data science.
- Engineering: Contains physics including laboratory work, technical mechanics, fundamentals of electrical engineering.
Depending on your personal preferences, it is possible to choose form a variety of different electives (like e.g. Machine Learning, Business Intelligence or Image Processing).
Career Perspectives
Applied mathematicians are trained
- to recognize common patterns in a wide variety of application scenarios,
- to choose and develop suitable mathematical models and solutions and
- to implement them in practice.
The profile of the degree prorgamme offers outstanding career perspectives, e.g., in industry or engineering firms, with telecommunication and transport companies, with energy providers, or in the banking and insurance business.
Depending on your choice of specialization and electives, the employment opportunities range from traditional engineering vacancies over the position as a data scientist to careers in auditing and consulting.
