Key Features
The Insurance and Risk Management (Honours) programme offered at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg is designed in such a way that students can choose to study on a full-time or part-time basis.
Part-time students take courses in the evenings in Year 1 and in Year 2 courses that were in the day the previous year go to the evening to enable part-time students to take them.
Most of the theories in insurance and risk have a strong economics grounding. The Honours Programme seeks to deepen students’ understanding of insurance and risk management as a contributor to value creation within firms and businesses and enabling households and communities to derive their livelihoods sustainably despite the presence of risk.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- Two (2) components of the programme are compulsory. The first is BUSE4009A, on the regulation of insurance, and the second is BUSE4020A, a research paper on an insurance and/or risk management topic of a student’s choice.
- In addition to the two (2) compulsory components above, a student must choose any three (3) from the following courses:
- Advanced Financial Risk Management*
- Advanced Specialised Insurance
- Reinsurance
- Advanced Liability Insurance and Risk Management

General requirements
- Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Economic Science or equivalent.
- At least an upper second class pass in the final undergraduate course in the subject.
- Honours application supporting documents needed:
- 1. Certified copy of your degree certificates
- 2. Certified copy of academic transcripts as well as grade key
- 3. All certificates need to be transcribed to English if in another language.
- 4. SAQA evaluation (International applicants)
- 5. Proof of English proficiency (International applicants)
