South African Sign Language (SASL) is recognised and used as a first language by a large number of Deaf South Africans. Since 1996, SASL has been officially recognised as the language of learning and teaching for Deaf learners.

The Bachelor of Arts in South African Sign Language (Honours) offered at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg strives to produce students who are in a position to make a contribution to the development of our country in terms of the constitutional principles of social justice and equality for all.
