Overview
Learners will gain strong foundation in the principles of veterinary nursing through a blend of traditional learning methods coupled with the use of immersive technology. Opportunities to apply scientific principles in practical’s & workshops are embedded throughout the on-campus delivery and in veterinary practice work placement during 2nd and 3rd year of the programme. All relevant practical competencies will be covered in relation to dogs, cats, horses, farm animals and exotic species.
The delivery of the Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing at Munster Technological University will be based on the development of four pillars of learner development, namely; Core Science and Clinical knowledge, Veterinary Nursing knowledge, Practical Veterinary Nursing Skills Development and Professionalism of a Veterinary Nurse.
Key facts
In your first year, you’ll study topics that are fundamental to veterinary nursing and prepare you for your first placement in September of your second year:
- Professional Practice: introduces you to the idea of the veterinary nurse working as professional what is expected of you as a professional, it will also develop your communication skills.
- Principles of Veterinary Nursing: develops the practical veterinary nursing skills required on your first placement through learning the theory and practicing these skills in the clinical skills laboratory. This will include clinic management, clinical examinations, restraint techniques and nursing care.
- Veterinary Anatomy: two modules will develop a detailed understanding of the anatomy of animals, relating anatomical structures to clinical and biological problems.
- Veterinary Physiology: develop a detailed understanding of how the major organ systems work and relating the principles of physiology to abnormal clinical signs in animals.
- Animal Behaviour and Welfare: Practical knowledge of normal patterns of behaviour as well as developing concepts and theories relating to animal welfare, veterinary ethics and applied welfare issues in common farm and companion animal species.
