Overview

The Design (Environmental Design) (Hons) degree from PolyU Design , a four-year full-time studio-oriented programme, is one of the two key design specialisms in the Environmental and Interior Design cluster of the School of Design for local and international applicants.

Driven by innovative, explorative, and critical questions, the programme guides students’ creative development in the manipulation and mastery of spatial design linked to environmental as well as architectural inquiry.

With a structured progression throughout the four-year programme, core issues covered in the Environmental Design programme include a focus on the spatial and formal aspects of urban development, drawing from disciplines that impact the environment of dense settings, environmental technologies, and the spatial outcomes for positive change.

The Environmental Design programme focuses on harnessing the design skill to coordinate and harmonize environmental technologies, environmental data, architectural design, landscape design, and urban design to steer new trends of the interior and exterior settings of contemporary cities. 

Programme Structure 

• Year 1 Design Foundation: Common Basics 
  • The focus of Year 1 is to provide a broad-based foundation in common design skills, knowledge, and integration to enable students to become creative thinkers.

• Year 2 Design Cluster: Interdisciplinary Collaborations 
  • Year 2 students select and stream into one of five selected Design Clusters. The five clusters provide a broad base of discipline-oriented study in preparation for specialisation in Years 3 and 4.

• Year 3 Design Specialism: Discipline Exploration 
  • Year 3 is the first year of discipline-specific studies in one of the nine Design Specialisms offered. Students explore the chosen Design Specialism through dedicated study pathways indiscipline-specific subjects.

• Year 4 Design Specialism: Integrative Design 
  • Year 4 is the second year of Design Specialism. The year programme develops students’ critical and professional ability in design. Another important learning outcome students will accomplish is the research and negotiation of a final design proposal, also known as the ‘Capstone’ project, where they demonstrate the ability to address sophisticated issues and to overcome multi-faceted challenges encountered in the process.

Career Prospects

The Environmental Design Programme is intended to prepare students for a career in the profession of spatial and environmental design industry primarily to provide service in Hong Kong and Mainland China at an international standard, for collaborations with global companies and organizations.

Additionally, it informs students of the need and possibilities of further education while preparing students for education at the post-graduate level.

Graduates of the BA (Hons) in Design (Environmental Design) are able to design at different scales and within a number of spatial systems, harnessing different disciplines that deal with the environmental design industry including interior design, interior architecture, spatial design, environmental data, set design, exhibition design, furniture and furnishing design, lighting design, urban space design, landscape and interior-scape design, and experience design.
