Overview
The course is for graduates from the Victorian College of the Arts’ Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) and dance graduates of other institutions who wish to extend and develop their practice through creative and critical research. It offers a flexible and supportive approach that makes it possible for you to strengthen your practice while developing research skills that can lead to an MFA or PhD.
Dance at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music emphasises artistry, performance, choreographic practice and research. The Fine Arts - Dance (Honours) program at University of Melbourne is designed to foster your creativity and innovation, advance your dance experience, and develop skills of analysis and critique within in the field of dance studies.
You will join a vibrant community of dance makers and researchers, with opportunities to learn from expert practitioners and visiting choreographers. You will develop an independent project over the course of your honours year, culminating in a performance and an accompanying research paper.
The course extends your knowledge of dance as a field of enquiry and scholarship. You will study dance research methods, design and manifest a major project and develop critical writing and creative documentation skills. Artist-academics will mentor and supervise your research. There are opportunities to perform and create new work, and to participate in collaborative and inter-disciplinary group work. The course will also introduce you to a range of research methodologies including inter-disciplinary, practice-led and indigenous.

- For entry into the specialisation, all applicants must meet the standard eligibility for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Degree with Honours), in addition to the requirements below.
Entry to the Dance major is based on a written proposal, portfolio, and an interview for shortlisted applicants only.
- A statement of 700-1000 words outlining the proposed research and a summary of relevant experience.
- Selected video examples of your practice as a dancer, choreographer, or performer.
